Philosophy and Perspective
|

 |
"Philosophy" literally means "love of wisdom". Here
are books and links that provide perspective about the emerging view of
reality.
Books
 | The Power of Myth - Joseph Campbell |
 | Hero with a Thousand Faces - Joseph Campbell
 | In both his books, using his knowledge of religions and
mythology, Joseph Campbell discloses the potential unified view of
reality and its contrast and conflict with the traditional view.
He shows us that understanding of an integrative view of life has
existed for millennia, but only a handful of people have
comprehended it.

 | The
Science of Ethics: A User's Guide for Modern Humans - Arthur M. Jackson
 | This will give you a flavor of this work's significance. It's
opening quote is: "There is only one Good, Knowledge There
is only one Evil, Ignorance. . . Socrates". It then goes
on to say: "The search is for real meaning and worthwhile
living based on knowledge and understanding. It attributes the
current conditions of non-productive human suffering, pain, and
anguish in the form of starvation, poverty, disease, depression,
etc. to our collective ignorance. Knowledge is proposed as being
the means for each individual to achieve a sustainable feeling
that their life has meaning; i.e., their full positive potential."
This is a very ambitious work of real genius. |

Links
 | Montana Freethinkers
 | This site is about the most positive, spiritual aspects of
Atheism, Humanism, and Free Thinking. It provides an individual,
personally useful view of spirituality.
|
|
 | Pure Reason
 | This is a particularly fascinating site. It's author, Satheesan
Kochicheril, describes, in the words of the world's great
religions, scientists like Einstein, poets like Emerson and
Thoreau, psychiatrists like Jung and philosophers like Spinoza,
the same integrative view of life. He calls this view "The
Expression of the Enlightenment Attained by the Prophets".

|
 | The Wisdom Page
 | Information is abundant. Wisdom is still rare. As Joseph Meeker
put it "Wherever it exists, wisdom shows itself as a
perception of the relativity and relationships among things. It is
an awareness of wholeness that does not lose sight of
particularity or concreteness, or of the intricacies of
interrelationships. It is where left and right brain come together
in a union of logic and poetry and sensation, and where
self-awareness is no longer at odds with awareness of the
otherness of the world." The reason this definition of
wisdom is so important is that it is also, in essence, a
definition of the integrative view of reality.

|
 | Quest of the Unquiet Mind
 | This is a "webjournal of thoughtful dissent" that
publishes social commentary, cultural critique and observations on
our "human condition". It often takes a refreshingly
challenging attitude toward what we've been taught is
"truth" or "reality".
|
|
 | Progressive Humanism
 | Many Humanist efforts are simply locked into a battle with
organized religion and effectively perpetuate the problem they
ostensibly exist to solve. This one is different. In the words of
its author, Carl Coon: "Progressive humanism ............
strikes a balance between a humanist concern for all humanity, and
an impulse to solve problems and get on with the job, whatever
that may be. These two concerns are each important but they often
conflict. The secret to a meaningful life can be found in finding
ways to reconcile them, and to achieve lasting solutions to the
world's current problems in a humane manner."

|
 | New Era
 | New Era is a membership community that provides "A
unique and extensive library of inspirational mind-body videos
about healing, spirituality, psychology, new science, meditation,
metaphysics, music and much more." Items can be rented
rather than purchased.

 | Achievement Through Wholeness of
Awareness
 | This site dramatically illustrates how an integrative, holistic
view of life is available to those who look for it - and that it's
not positively correlated with academic achievement (although it
might be negatively correlated). This site could also be called
"Achievement through Awareness of Wholeness" |
